Why I Started Making Time For Weekly Workouts

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that adults should be physically active for thirty minutes a day, five times a week.

In 2013, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that roughly 80% of Americans didn’t get the recommended exercise they needed each week.

Fact: The less physically active you are, the more likely you’ll develop health issues

My birthday is quickly approaching and this year — as well as going forward — I want to make it a point to genuinely focus on my health. I’ve had the Nike Training Club app on my iPhone for over a year and finally decided to put it to use last month. Better late than never.

Reasons I chose the app* over joining an actual gym?

  • It’s completely free
  • Workouts are curated by Nike trainers and athletes
  • The convenience and intimacy of working out at home
  • Being able to cherry pick workout plans for the month
  • Equipment is optional — all I need is space

I’m currently on month two of my workout plan and my body feels healthier, stronger. To be honest, some days are still hard. I’ve missed workouts simply because I just didn’t have the energy or space to do them, and I’m okay with that, as long as I’m setting realistic goals and moving towards them. Having a positive attitude and being your number 1 cheerleader are very important to your success.

My workout setup is a mat (helps a lot with planks), a set of dumbbells (that aren’t always needed) and my iPhone. Very minimal, very me.

If you’re still hesitant about working out and the commitments that come with it, the easiest way to be active is by walking. In the morning before work or a nice stroll after dinner. Exercise doesn’t have to be a painful thing and a little can go a long way.

  1. Bravo! I could definitely feel a difference, not just physically but mentally, in the way I felt on a day to day basis when I started working out again about three months back. Keep it up, and looking forward to read about your progress!
